Digital Piano and Keyboard Sales & Rentals

Are you thinking about getting a piano but aren't sure you are ready for the commitment of time and money? We are pleased to offer digital keyboards and pianos for rent.

Even though the terms "Digital Piano" and "Keyboard" sound similar, they refer to two very distinct kinds of instruments. Digital pianos, as their name implies, are designed specifically to have the sound and feel of acoustic pianos — and sometimes to look like them as well. Digital keyboards, on the other hand, typically offer a wider range of sounds, but rarely have the feel or look of an acoustic piano.

Key differences between a digital piano and a keyboard include:

  • Number of Keys - Digital pianos almost always have 88 keys (except for the P-121B), while keyboards typically have 61 keys.

  • Feel - The keys of a digital piano will almost always be weighted, giving them a feel very close to that of an acoustic piano. Yamaha digital pianos have graded weightings, where the “action” is heavier in bass notes and lighter in treble notes, like an acoustic piano.

  • Sound Quality - As you might expect, digital pianos tend to have better quality piano sounds than most digital keyboards. The recordings (“samples”) of the acoustic pianos stored in their memory are often multi-layer — that is, taken over many different key ranges and at multiple degrees of intensity — giving them a great degree of realism. However, the tradeoff for these kinds of precision piano sounds is that there is often less memory space for other types of sounds. For that reason, you’ll generally find more, and a larger variety of sounds in a digital keyboard than in a digital piano, though in some cases the piano sounds won’t be quite as high quality.

  • Size, Portability, and Price - For the most part, digital pianos tend to be considerably larger and heavier than digital keyboards, which are designed with portability in mind. Digital pianos a

  • Music Lessons Applicability - most piano teachers want their students to learn on a digital piano, not a keyboard. The digital piano offers the right feel, tactile feedback, dynamics, and sound for beginning and advanced students alike.

Selection can vary, but here is an example of different digital keyboards and pianos we stock and the monthly rental fee. Note that the corresponding stand can be rented for an additional $5/month and is highly encouraged:

As with all our instrument rentals, our standard "no-risk" rental terms apply. All rental payments apply toward the eventual purchase of the instrument. But if you decide to return it - no worries. (Do note there is a 3-month minimum rental period, but you really owe yourself at least that long to try it out).

And as a bonus - if you are looking for an instructor to help you get started, we have them too! Any of our resident piano teachers would be happy to meet with you and get you playing in no time!

Piano delivery and pickup is available for $45 each way within the Lamorinda area. Delivery/pickup is possible outside Lamorinda - please call for a quote.
